Hands-On Sensorial Activities at Home
🎯 Learning objectives
After this article, you should be able to:
- Know the classic sensorial materials
- Set up three hands-on activities at home
- Use words like big, bigger, biggest with your child
Before children can understand numbers and letters, they need to understand the world through their senses. educators call this "sensorial education", and it needs almost no special equipment.
The classics
- The pink tower — ten pink cubes from 1 cm to 10 cm. Children build them from biggest to smallest, learning size, order and careful movement.
- The brown stairs — ten brown prisms, each a little thinner than the last. A stair for the hands.
- Knobbed cylinders — cylinders of different sizes that only fit in their own holes. Mistakes are visible and fixable.
- Color tablets — matching and grading colours from light to dark.
Home versions (free!)
- Stacking cups — build a tower biggest to smallest, then nest them back. That is the pink tower!
- Sock matching — pair socks by colour and size, then line them up light to dark. That is the color tablets!
- Kitchen cylinders — sort jars and lids, match each lid to its jar. That is the knobbed cylinders!
- The silence game — sit very still for one minute and listen. What do you hear?
Say the words
Use rich size words as you play: big, bigger, biggest · small, smaller, smallest · heavy, light · rough, smooth. Language and senses grow together.
