10 Science Questions to Try at Home This Week

🎯 Learning objectives

After this article, you should be able to:

  • Try one simple science question each day
  • Make a prediction before every test
  • Record what actually happened

One question a day. Predict first, test second, and talk about what happened. Everything below uses things you already own.

The list

  1. Will it sink or float? Bowl of water + spoon, cork, stone, toy. Predict each one first!
  2. What melts ice fastest? Three ice cubes: on a plate, in cold water, in warm water.
  3. Why do shadows move? A torch and a toy, in a dark room.
  4. What sticks to a magnet? Walk around the house with a fridge magnet and test everything.
  5. What happens to a plant in the dark? Two bean seeds, one sunny spot, one cupboard.
  6. Does sugar disappear faster in hot or cold water? Two glasses, two spoons of sugar, stir and watch.
  7. What happens to a wet sock on the washing line? Check it morning and evening — where did the water go?
  8. Can you make sound with a ruler? Hold it half off a table and twang it — then change the length.
  9. Why do bubbles pop? Blow some, watch them land: dry finger vs wet finger.
  10. Which falls faster, a feather or a stone? Drop them together. (The stone — air pushes the feather. On the Moon they would tie!)

The 8-step habit

Keep every experiment on the same path: Question → Observe → Predict → Explore → Discover → Explain → Practice → Reflect. Ten minutes is plenty.
