Simple Words: Cat, Dog, Sun and More

๐ŸŽฏ Learning objectives

After this article, you should be able to:

  • Read simple three-letter words
  • Match words to pictures
  • Blend letter sounds into words

Once you know your letter sounds, you can build your very first words. Three letters. Three sounds. One picture. Let's go!

Word: CAT ๐Ÿฑ

Say the sounds one by one, then squeeze them together:

cโ€ฆ aโ€ฆ tโ€ฆ โ†’ cat!

Word: DOG ๐Ÿถ

dโ€ฆ oโ€ฆ gโ€ฆ โ†’ dog!

Word: SUN โ˜€๏ธ

sโ€ฆ uโ€ฆ nโ€ฆ โ†’ sun!

Sound blending

Blending means running the sounds together smoothly, like a toy train joining its carriages: c-a-t becomes "cat", not "cuh-ah-tuh". Try it with these:

  • b + a + t = bat ๐Ÿฆ‡
  • h + e + n = hen ๐Ÿ”
  • f + r + o + g = frog ๐Ÿธ

Play: picture or word?

Look at the picture and say the word, then check the letters. Picture first, letters second โ€” that is the EduManual way!

Practise all of these words with sound in the word studio, and play the word matching game when you are ready.
