🎯 Learning objectives

After completing this lesson, the child should be able to:

  • Trace letter shapes with a finger
  • Say each letter's sound while tracing
  • Blend two sounds into a syllable
In hands-on learning, children learn letters by touch. Your finger is about to become a teacher!

What are sandpaper letters?

Each letter is cut from rough sandpaper on a smooth board. The child touches the letter while saying its sound — the fingers, the voice and the eyes all learn together.

Try it right now

  1. Hold up two fingers: your index finger and your middle finger.
  2. Trace the letter a in the air, slowly, the way you would write it.
  3. Say its sound as you trace: "a… a… a…" (like in apple).
  4. Now trace s and say "ssss" (like a snake!).
  5. Trace m and say "mmm" (like something yummy).

Why touch works

The rough texture sends the letter shape straight into your hand's memory. Writing begins before the pencil — and reading follows writing.

Play the sound game

"I spy with my little eye… something beginning with sss!" Guessing by sound is how hands-on learners hear the letters inside words.
