For curious minds ages 3–12

🧪 Vibration Detective

Objective: See and feel the vibrations that make sound.

🔒 Safety Notice: Ask an adult to supervise. Do not taste any experiment materials. Do not use dangerous chemicals. Follow the instructions carefully and wash your hands afterwards.

🔮 Step 1 — Predict first!

Your prediction

Predict: what will happen to the rice when you tap the drum harder?

🧰 Materials

A rubber band, a plastic container, rice grains, a drum or box

📋 Instructions

1. Stretch the rubber band and pluck it — watch and feel it shake.
2. Put rice grains on the drum and tap it gently. Watch the rice dance!
3. Hum with your fingers on your throat. Feel the vibration.

⚙️ The variables

🔧 What we change

How strongly you tap or pluck

📏 What we measure

How much the objects vibrate

⚖️ What stays the same

The same container and rubber band

📊 Step 2 — Collect your data

Enter your own measurements below — the chart draws itself as you type. If your experiment does not have measurements, record what you saw in the notes box.

🔍 Step 3 — Prediction vs observation

💡 The science behind it

Every sound starts with a vibration. The tapping makes the drum skin vibrate, and the vibration shakes the rice. Bigger vibrations make louder sounds.

🏁 Conclusion

You saw sound with your own eyes — the dancing rice was moved by invisible vibrations!

🚀 Extension challenge

Can you make a sound without anything vibrating? Try to find one — scientists say it cannot be done!
